A worked example
Four tasks with their durations in days. B and C can start once A is done; D needs both. A forward pass finds the earliest times, a backward pass finds the latest. Float is the slack a task has.
| Task | After | Days | Earliest start | Earliest finish | Float |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | None | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| B | A | 3 | 2 | 5 | 1 |
| C | A | 4 | 2 | 6 | 0 |
| D | B and C | 2 | 6 | 8 | 0 |
The project takes 8 days. A, C and D have no float, so they are the critical path. B can slip by one day. Links that form a loop are rejected.
